OHNHR Podcast 43: Sociologist Corey Wrenn

"The Vegan Society didn't just magically appear one day; Donald Watson didn't just crawl out of a bush and say, 'let there be light.'"

If you are interested in the history of the animal advocacy movement, then this is the podcast for you.

I invited fellow sociologist Corey Lee Wrenn to talk about the major themes in her recent [2019] book, Piecemeal Protest: Animal Rights in the Age of Non-Profits

We cover a lot of ground here - social movements and factionalism, first and second wave animal advocacy, animal rights philosopher Tom Regan, The Abolitionist Approach headed by Gary Francione, Feminists for Animal Rights, DxE, and much more.

ENJOY!

  1. What a great chat, thank you both for doing this. There's lots for us all to think and talk about.

I especially like how Corey's song choice came out in 1983, the same year as The Case For Animal Rights by Tom Regan. Coincidence? :)

    1. Thanks for the comment. I'm sure it was a coincidence!!

  2. Totally agree with Corey, that GLF and Regan would never have stayed together. There is a club called "Banned by Gary", and you're not a bona fide activist if you're not in that club.
